Chico Artistic Skating Club

Cal Skate Artistic Skating Royals 2014-2 Junior Royals isolatedCal Skate Artistic Skating

Cal Skate Chico has one of the most accomplished artistic skating clubs in the country. Competing in events and tournaments on a state and national level for more than 30 years, our trophy case is modestly full.

The Club has members ranging from 4 years to 74 years old, male and female alike. Almost all competitors are on the traditional quad roller skates, but a small amount prefer the Triax inline artistic skate. Skaters compete in events like compulsory figures, team and solo dance, and the exciting freestyle dance division (solo and pairs), where jumps and loops are performed identical to those moves seen by ice skaters in the Winter Olympics. In fact, as recently as February 2012 IOC president Jacques Rogge told reporters that roller sports are one of eight sports in consideration for the 2020 Olympics in either Istanbul, Tokyo, or Madrid! Almost all of our skaters compete in competitions and invitationals throughout California. The skaters have their own home invitational every April where they get to showcase their skills in front of their friends and family on ‘home floor’ while inviting skaters from around the country to compete in Chico. The rest of the year they travel to various competitions at rinks throughout Northern California. In June, some skaters compete at the Regional competition (usually held in Fresno, CA), and in July/August the best of the best compete at Nationals – held in cities such as Lincoln (NE), Pensacola (FL), Peoria (IL), and Fort Wayne (IN). This year’s National competition will be held in Albuquerque (NM) from July 21-August 4. Lincoln (NE) will be the host in 2014. Prior National Champions hailing from Chico’s Artistic Skate Club are Melissa Cunningham, Amelia Becker, Mike and Joanne Rutledge, Donna Orcutt-Price, Juliana Hoffman, Mark Hubble, Anna Becker, and Amanda Schafer.

Of course to reach these high standards, you need to have great coaching and Cal Skate has some of the best USARS certified coaches and teachers – Leighanne Herndon, Olivia Smith, Mike Rutledge, and the Club founder and president, Jody Harrah. These coaches are involved in teaching the students during public and private lessons, readying them for upcoming meets and tournaments throughout the country, choreographing their various routines, and above all making sure they have fun while teaching them important life skills. The Club is an organization emphasized on competition, but some members are involved purely for the recreational and personal benefits.

If you have any questions about the club, contests, or skating lessons, please contact us at Cal Skate by calling 530-343-1601, emailing us (CLICK HERE), or stopping by during our public lesson time (Saturdays from 12-1:00pm) when almost all coaches are present for questions and answers.
